What is the “My Housing Issue” Gateway?

The "My Housing Issue" Gateway is a free website created by the TDS Charitable Foundation to help private and social tenants solve housing problems.

The website:

  • Gives clear, easy-to-understand information about your housing rights and options.

  • Directs you to the right service or authority for your specific housing issue for free.

  • Encourages the early resolution of disputes, to prevent the issue becoming too time-consuming and costly.

Aims of the Gateway

Help you make complaints

  • Show you how to complain and who to complain to.

Make it easier to solve housing problems

  • Encourage quick and simple solutions where possible.

Clear up confusion

  • Simplify the process of finding the right help.

Inform tenants

  • Give clear information about your rights and the options available to solve your issue.

Why was the Gateway created?

The current system is confusing

There are many places to go for help, like councils, courts, ombudsman schemes, and more. This can make it hard to know where to start.

Research shows that many tenants don’t know where to go

  1. Only half of private tenants and 38% of social tenants know what to do if their landlord or letting agent does not fix a problem.

  2. Most tenants report issues like repairs to landlords or agents first, but only around 1 in 5 take their complaint further if nothing is done.

Tenants need support

Many tenants don’t understand their options or how to navigate the system. The Gateway makes this process simpler and easier.

Issues covered by the Gateway

The Gateway can help with the following housing issues:

  • Repairs and maintenance (for example, mould, heating issues, plumbing issues, damage)

  • Deposit issues (for example, deposit not protected, difficulty getting your deposit back)

  • Eviction

  • Anti-social behaviour (for example, problems with neighbours)

  • Rent (for example, rent arrears, rent increases)

  • Poor communication, customer service, or misleading information from your landlord, letting agent, council or housing association

  • Tenant fees (for example, unfair fees, holding deposits)

  • Harassment from your landlord or letting agent

If you or anyone you know is experiencing a housing problem, visit the ‘My Housing Issue’ Gateway website.
